Considers the Cotton Genesis (London, British Library, MS Cotton Otho B. VI) in the context of other manuscripts of Genesis, discovering that only this and the Vienna Genesis (Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, MS 2721) offer the text of Genesis alone, isolated from other books of the Bible. Argues that referring to Western vernacular paraphrases as "Genesis manuscripts" is inaccurate. Asserts that the Cotton Genesis should be considered an experiment with the possibilities of book illustration, and that it should be recognized as an unusual book type. Appendix offers a new reconstruction of a fragment of the manuscript.
