Discusses French president François Mitterrand's efforts to use architecture to transform the image of Paris from a 19th c. cliché to an emblem of the 21st c. Describes the 12 state-sponsored building projects (initiated in 1981 and nearly all completed) and Mitterrand's close involvement with them, including the choice of architects.
