Draws attention to issues of gender and power in frescoes of mythological subjects executed by Primaticcio for François I at Fontainebleau; argues that the recurrence of themes implying belief in the natural dominance of men in these frescoes and in the drawing of Mars and Venus by Rosso, 1530 (Paris, Louvre) suggests that the threat of female insubordination was real, given the presence of powerful women at court.
