Identifies the Head of Christ by Petrus Christus in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, as the earliest Netherlandish painting of an iconographical type that conflates the Holy Face with passional imagery, and relates it to legends of S. Veronica and the sudarium, and with indulgenced prayers.
