Study of the iconography of the altarpiece painted in 1511 for the commandery of the Hospitalers, Grünen Wörth, in Strasbourg, comprised of the Mass of S. Gregory (Cleveland Museum of Art); S. Anne with the Christ Child, the Virgin, and S. John the Baptist (Washington, National Gallery); and S. John at Patmos (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art); relates the depiction of the two S. Johns to the devotional movement initiated in the 14th c. by the founder of Grünen Wörth, Rulman Merswin.
