Study of the embellishment of margins of Medieval manuscripts, extended to the margins of specific sites of power (monastery, cathedral, court, and city) and to conventions of art historical methodology. The reviewer, focusing on questions of methodology, finds the book often wide of its mark and the method historically licentious.
