Argues that analysis of Fragonard's Perrette and the Pot of Milk (Paris, Musée Cognacq-Jay), a scene from the fable of La Fontaine, The milkmaid and the pot of milk, must take into account the double movement of the portrayal (by means of the fall) and negation (by means of handling and composition) of the law of gravity as the law common to all things. Relates this to Adorno's metaphor of the circus act for the absurdity and enigmatic quality of art.
