Abstract (en)
Lists recent developments in the United States affecting deaccessioning (art market, changes in tax law, focused collecting policies, and concern for quality of conservation and storage); rejects the idea of legislation regulating museum practices; and sets forth general rules that should guide deaccessioning. Includes a note on the code of ethics adopted by the American Association of Museums in May 1991, which stipulates that proceeds from sales of collection materials be restricted to acquisitions for collections.
