Introduces this issue of the Art Journal which is devoted to the study of Romanticism. Presents several distinguishing features of the movement, in particular its resistance to canonical aesthetic imperatives, its cultivation of notions of primitiveness, nature, spontaneity and imagination, and its celebration of the artist in confrontation with the social and political status quo.
