Abstract
(en)
Shows that interlace designs in early Insular art, while clearly a matter of aesthetic preference, did in certain contexts have a magic potential and apotropaic function; and examines the presence of holy images on chancel enclosures in the 7th c., focusing on the images described by Bede at S. Peter, Monkwearmouth; emphasizes the influence of such images on the nascent Christian art of the British Isles, and considers the Ruthwell and Bewcastle crosses as examples.
