Studies the development of the S. Petersburg avant-garde, 1910-1914. Discusses the art society Triangle, led by the art theorist Kul'bin, and compares his theories with those of Matvejs. Shows how the Union of Youth grew out a questioning of the formal principles of art by writers and artists associated with Triangle. Examines the relationship of the Union of Youth with the Moscow group the Donkey's Tail, and considers the contributions of Rozanova and Malevich to the S. Petersburg group.
