Addresses the complex network of cultural, social, and political issues affecting the conservation of monuments and the reorganization of collections in Berlin following reunification, and the high stakes involved. Stresses the critical need for improved communication and cooperation between the professions of art history and monument conservation in order to prevent serious cultural loss, and suggests practical ways to achieve this. Written in response to the 28th International Congress of the History of Art, held in Berlin in July 1992.
