Abstract (en)

Study of the civic culture of resistence that formed in Barcelona between 1888 and Franco's defeat of the Second Republic in 1939, and of Picasso's relationship to the movements and events of that culture. The reviewer observes that the author's emphasis is on social movements and on ritual (including festivals) as a key to understanding these; and that her treatment of Picasso lacks depth, failing, for instance, to deal with his use of motifs from popular culture in works such as Parade and the Dreams and Lies of Franco.
