Study of the complex development of the decorative arts in France from Art Nouveau in the 1890s to Art Deco and modernism in the 1920s, epitomized by Le Corbusier. The reviewer finds this an important publication, which challenges traditional interpretations, extends the assumed boundaries of art and architectural history, and demonstrates that designers, painters, and architects of the modern period shared common ideals and interests, not necessarily related to the pioneering interpretations of modernism.
