Abstract (en)

The reviewer questions the approach of Schwartz and Bok, which deals with Saeredam's background, connections, patronage, associations and artistic production to the exclusion of issues of style and iconography; and notes that the catalogue of the exhibition at the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen in Rotterdam is directed to the explication of master-works as objects of aesthetic contemplation; he calls for a combination of the two approaches.
