Nead argues that the nude is about containment of nature through art, and analyzes representations of women from Dürer to Mapplethorpe, and debates on the subject by authors from Kenneth and T.J. Clark to Carol Duncan. The reviewer commends Nead's approach and her demonstration of the paradox at the heart of the iconic female nude, which is that it is both at the center as icon, and at the margin, threatening excess.
