Examines door and window surrounds in the architectural oeuvre of Borromini in the light of architectural theory and the rules it established for ornament during this period. Considers the writings of Vitruvius and of Alberti, and discusses both Mannerist and Baroque surrounds. Attempts to show how Borromini could be considered in his day both to follow and to manipulate the architectural rules.
