- Analyzes the program of the fresco decorations (1610 and following) in the Cappella Paolina, S. Maria Maggiore, Rome, including works by Guido Reni, Cavaliere d'Arpino, and Cigoli. The program is formulated around the focal point of a late antique icon of the Madonna and Child placed over the altar. It features leaders of important early Christian communities and emphasizes the antiheretical stance and missionary role of the Church. Attributes the program to Tommaso Bozio. Includes a section on Cigoli's depiction of the Virgin on the crescent moon, and its relation to Galileo's discoveries and to the political meaning of the column of the Virgin Mary in the Piazza di S. Maria Maggiore. Part II examines the complex interaction of the architectural and sculptural elements of the lower wall surfaces with the icon and the upper register frescoes.
