Study of the 13th c. Franciscan devotional text; shows that it appeared at the time and in the circle of S. Bonaventura (ca.1360s); and surveys its influence on art, exemplified by the reliefs on Nicola and Giovanni Pisano's pulpits and in Giotto's Arena Chapel frescoes in Padua.
