Abstract (en)
Identifies the drawing in the Princes Gate Collection at the Courtauld Institute Galleries, London, as the original by Michelangelo; dates it before 1537; and reexamines the iconography. Argues that the subject is the salvation of man from vice, and that the winged figure represents the soul animating the body, the inert beautiful youth who clings to the world and is haunted by sins.
