Published in relation to the international symposium titled Otto Wagner and the genesis of European modernism, held at the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities, Santa Monica, 3-5 Nov 1988. Contains essays by Renata Kassal-Mikula, Peter Haiko, August Sarnitz, Fritz Neumeyer, Iain Boyd Whyte, Ákos Moravánszky, J. Duncan Berry, Harry Francis Mallgrave, Stanford Anderson, and Werner Oechslin. Essays focus less on the visually seductive aspects of Wagner's creations than on the social, intellectual, and artistic framework within which the architect brought his works to fruition.
