Abstract (en)

The author discusses his 1987 book, which examines the current state of art criticism in an historical context, and considers the relationship of postmodern developments in art to the change in art criticism from the 1940s to the 1980s. Also responds to an article by Gary Shapiro in this issue of Leonardo on Carrier's assessment of American art criticism.
