Abstract (en)

Compares two paintings of famous military leaders traversing bodies of water in boats: E. Leutze's Washington Crossing the Delaware, 1851 (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art) and H. Kretzschmer's The Landing of Kurfurst Friedrich Wilhelm I at Rügen, 1861-1862 (Berlin, Berlin Museum). Outlines the historical events depicted in the paintings, and points out the iconographic and compositional sources for the artists' treatments of the theme.
