Reconstructs a chronology for the five states of Rembrandt's etched Self-portrait with a Soft Hat, begun in 1631 and completed some time in 1633/34 after several chalk additions and corrections to earlier states. Then reestablishes the provenance of the touched proofs which were in the vast collection of J.P. Zomer shortly after the artist's death, then passed into the collections of A.M. Zanetti and of Consul Joseph Smith.
