Traces the evolution of the "linear city"--an urban plan in which architectural features are placed along central arteries of transportation--from the late 19th c. experiments of Soria y Mata near Madrid, through the garden city idea of the 1920s in England and Russia (especially in the work of Miljutin), to the urban plans developed in Italy under Mussolini in the 1930s. Concludes with a look at recent urban solutions, including Koolhaas's plans for Melun-Sénart.
