The rapid response in the surrounding countryside to Zürich's Bildermandat (Mandate on Images) in June of 1524 suggests the pre-existence of underlying social and religious tensions. The article examines the social and economic background to two incidents in the Thurgau which occurred, along with numerous others, within a few weeks following the Mandate. While these illustrate widely different aspects of rural iconoclasm in Switzerland, they both reveal some of the underlying tensions.
