Final volume of a series about art and its interpretation, mid-19th-late 20th c., which form the main texts of an Open University course. Chapter 1 covers modernism and culture in the United States, 1930-60, including the capitalist crisis and artistic culture in the 1930s, and Abstract Expressionism and the politics of criticism. Chapter 2 covers the politics of representation since the late 1960s; and chapter 3 reconsiders modernity and modernism, with sections on modernist theory and art, critical theory and cultural agency, new avant-gardes 1967-72, political art, the state of painting, postmodernism, the critique of difference (class, race, and gender), originality and appropriation, and the uses of history.
