Study of the avant-garde and the arts in Greenwich Village, New York, in 1963, considered by the author the most productive year of the period of transition between the 1950s and the late 60s. Focuses on the performing arts (including happenings, dance, performance, and video art) and the human body. Includes chapters on the art world and the concept and rhetoric of community; the intellectual and artistic crisis in post-war America; equality and freedom as key themes of American democracy in the 60s; and images of the human body, examined as the unifying factor among the arts and the locus for interdisciplinary work.
