Monograph on the 16th c. Spanish architect, whose works for Philip II include the Escorial, the Merchants' Exchange in Seville, and the urban renewal of Madrid; churches designed by or attributed to him include the cathedral of Valladolid and S. Vicente de Fora in Lisbon. Discusses his approach to architecture as a science; and analyzes the style he created, the estilo desornamentado, as an expression of the ideology of Philip's kingship and the values of Spanish Habsburg rule.
