Abstract
(en)
Argues that by limiting itself to written models of interpretation, iconography fails to take sufficient account of the uninscribed codes and cultural practices that are generated orally and performatively. Takes the example of the early 12th. c. trumeau of the abbey church of Souillac, and examines it in relation to the oral culture of the time and the spiritual life of the Benedictine monks. Proposes that the beasts on the trumeau had nothing to do with texts or narrative, but served a magical protective function as apotropaic guardians of sacred space.
