Abstract
(en)
Identifies three systems of representation in Medieval multi-framed images: thematic, narrative, and systematic. Accounts for the historical necessity of this way of organizing pictorial information (in examples ranging from a 5th c. ivory diptych in the Museo del Duomo, Milan, to the 12th c. ceiling paintings of S. Martin, Zillis) in terms of Medieval conceptions of time and history and what might be called sacred geography.
