Abstract
(en)
An historical, iconographic, stylistic and psychoanalytic account of James Barry's project, conceived in 1791 and not completed until 1804, to paint the subject of the birth of Pandora. Barry's writings and images relating to the project show, mainly by the discussion and representation of the body and analysis of the representation of divinities in ancient art, how the question of sexual differentiation is inseparable from the origins and the political and aesthetic functions of art. (The painting is in the Manchester City Art Gallery).
