Abstract
(en)
Detailed comparison with other European royal monuments shows that the drawn sword clasped in King John's left hand represents an entirely novel iconographical feature of the way in which a king was represented after death. Briefly outlines the historical circumstances of John's death and burial and considers what meanings might have been attached to the King's drawn sword in the Anglo-Norman and Angevin world of the late 12th and early 13th cs. The broader cultural significance of the sword is also discussed.
