Abstract
(en)
Argues that in his urban planning, Sixtus V utilized the Egyptian obelisks of Rome (especially the one in Piazza S. Pietro) as part of Counter-Reformation ideological warfare, to evoke the idea that the foundation of Roman Catholicism lay in Egyptian spirituality. Finds that this ideological statement had a direct influence on the subsequent hermetic studies of Athanasius Kircher and others.
