Traces the iconography of Hercules as a musician, especially playing the lyre, in Greek vase painting, and in ancient gems. Shows how these representations were misunderstood beginning in the Renaissance, when the gems and cameos, which were then in well-known Italian collections, were depicted by various artists who misinterpreted them. Among the artists who made prints after antique cameos were Giovanni Battista Franco and Enea Vico.
