Abstract (en)
Describes two silver pieces, a teapot and a coffee pot, in the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven. Both were made by the Richardson brothers Joseph and Nathaniel, active in Philadelphia, around 1775-1785. Traces the provenance of the works to the Philadelphia family of Samuel Powel, whose crest appears with that of his wife Elizabeth Willing on both pots. Although many wealthy Americans ordered silver from England, by the 1780s it became more patriotic and fashionable to patronize local silversmiths instead, who would work from English patterns.
