Abstract (en)
Examines the iconography of Orpheus in art of the 20th c., arguing that this mythological hero has "personified the artist concerned with civilizing the bestial nature of man, grappling with the vital questions of life and death, and the many dilemmas involved in creativity. Artists used Orpheus to express their profound searches into their inner beings to explain their ideals, fears, self-doubts and situations." Among the artists discussed are Delaunay, Zadkine, Klee, Dufy, Beckmann, Marc, Masson, Lipchitz, Picasso, Kokoschka, Twombly and Newman.
