Abstract (en)

Narrates the history of the American painter's work on the large canvas, completed in 1886, and places the work in the context of his oeuvre which otherwise consisted largely of watercolor views, mainly of Italy. Despite the importance of the Gulf of Spezia (Boston, Museum of Fine Arts) to Newman, the work made an indifferent impression on its European viewers.
