Discusses the career of the African-American painter and the inspiration for his series of 60 paintings, completed in 1941, illustrating the migration of black Americans from the south to northern cities in the first decades of the century. The works are divided between the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Phillips Collection, Washington.
