Chapman's discussion of perspective in his 1847 drawing book sheds new light on why Fitz Hugh Lane's seascapes were greatly admired during the 19th c. for their accurate depictions of flotillas of vessels, and were rediscovered during the 20th c. for their balanced, luminous compositions.
