Peale's 1778 mezzotint portrait of Washington has recently been rediscovered and is now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC. Although long lost, the print is shown here to have served as the model for a wide range of print portraits of the first president, including prints by John Norman and Paul Revere and by other anonymous artists after their works.
