Examines the landscape sketches produced by Cole in this period of his career, comparing them to earlier works which display a much stronger influence of the British instructional manuals that presumably served in the artist's education. Shows that these outdoor studies significantly changed Cole's approach to the depiction of landscape, and help illustrate the evolution of his vision for his Hudson River paintings.
