Argues that the chevet of the abbey church of S. Denis is unique because, unlike most churches designed at this time, it was designed by two individuals. The evidence presented, based on changes to the templates for the stonework made part-way through construction, suggests that each master mason interpreted Abbot Suger's requirements in his own way, producing a building that contained something of both. These changes occurred at the level of the imposts, where the semi-domes over the chapels were replaced with ribs, and compound piers between the chapels with slender drums.
