After Michael VIII regained control of Constantinople in 1261, he began a massive restoration and rebuilding campaign in the city which had been devastated by fire, neglect and war. He emphasized the repair of essential urban facilities such as walls and the harbor, the Blachernai Palace, and the principal churches. He also had the Column of S. Michael constructed to commemorate his renewal of the Byzantine city.
