Reports on the results of a technical analysis of a group of 15th c. German pasteprints in the Washington, DC, museum, which reveals the various layers that make up the works, including resin, tin foil, shellac and ink. Discusses the relationship of the prints to metalcut prints of the same period, showing that the same plates were used to create both; similarly, compares the technique of the pasteprint to that of certain medieval sculptural techniques. Surveys earlier scholarship on pasteprints, pointing out that insufficient scientific study led to gross misinterpretations of the makeup of pasteprints (hence their misleading name). Appendices list the nearly 80 pasteprints examined in this study, and summarize the scientific research performed at the National Gallery of Art.
