Interprets the iconography of a preparatory drawing by Eberhard for a print of the Allocution of Gregory XVI (Cologne, Dombauarchiv), here dated to 1838. The drawing is shown to be a response to the Prussian arrest of Archbishop Clemens August II, Freiherr von Droste zu Vischering, who was seized by the military in 1837 on account of his religious beliefs. Argues that the drawing and the print made after it should be considered apologies for the archbishop and for the freedom of religious expression in general.
