Abstract (en)
Identifies one of the buildings depicted in the background of the Adoration of the Lamb panel of Jan van Eyck's Ghent altarpiece (Ghent, S. Bavo) as Cologne cathedral. Points out that the cathedral is shown as a combination of the actual state of the building in the first half of the 15th c. and of a facade sketch dating from the 13th c., which must somehow have been available to the artist. Suggests that this conflated image was created for symbolic reasons connected to the iconographic program of the entire panel.
