Abstract
(en)
Reports on studies of fragments of the wooden coffin of S. Cuthbert dating from 698 (Durham, cathedral). Dendrochronological examination and radiocarbon testing dates the felling of the tree from which the coffin was made in the range of 420-1170, therefore failing to confirm the Anglo-Saxon date of the coffin by these means. Describes the recent research done on engraved and inscribed fragments and attempts to piece them together to form coffin panels; similar work has been done on an incised cross panel, which was probably part of the coffin.
