On the origins, development, and philosophy of the art history department at Princeton University under Allan Marquand, 1883-ca.1920. Includes an account of the survey of the state of the study of art history in colleges and universities in the United States conducted by E. Baldwin Smith in 1912 in response to an inquiry by Adolfo Venturi. Reports that according to the survey, Princeton was the outstanding center for art history: 34 courses were offered, the Art Museum had collections of paintings, sculpture, and casts, the study collection included 40,000 photographs, monographs were published, and fellowships available. (Includes appendices with a letter from Venturi to Marquand, 1901, and a reprint of Smith's report).
