Study of Dickinson's poetry in the context of her time, environment, and personal circumstances; includes discussion of her aesthetic, draws attention to the Ruskinian image of herself as a painter, and explores how she expressed her life in images drawn from literature and painting, e.g., Thomas Cole's Voyage of Life series and works of the Pre-Raphaelites. Also compares her imagery to that of the Hudson River School; and shows that she knew more about 19th c. visual art than previously supposed.
